Cantharidae - Soldier beetles

Recommended Posts

Alas I'm not able to tell you which as there are several very similar species which are all difficult to identify without microscopic identification...

I couldn't decide which of the two images I preferred

There's very little difference apart from the position of the feet and the back of its body.  I think #2 is the better pose and it's also marginally sharper.
Have you thought about rotating the image?

It looks a bit like something out of "Starship Troopers".  How big is it in real life?

Thanks Gareth, I did like the poses in both images, I did sorta prefer image 2. I did think about rotating the images, but when it comes to macro photography I prefer to post them as they were caught in camera.

About a 12-15mm long, it was also moving about. They also fly... I missed several doing this. It's also a bug rather than a beetle (despite it's name), beetles have a hard covering over their wings (think ladybirds etc) bugs only have a half covering over their wings. I bet you thought bugs and beetles were all the same thing....
