North Eastern Railway Electric Autocar

Built in 1903 as 1 of 2 prototypes by North Eastern Railway, 3170 was powered by a petrol engine driving a dynamo which supplied power to the electric motors. It was withdrawn in 1931 and spent the next 70 years in a field in North Yorkshire where it had been converted into a holiday home.

What a great looking vehicle Rye ...  super  image  in mono too .... where  was this ?

Thanks Clicker, it's on the Embsay Steam Railway near Skipton, it was on the list of places to visit for the Grand Tour.

It is and totally unique, when it was built in 1903 it was about 50 years ahead of it's time. I did take a lot of photo's of it running through the countryside but they just didn't really work as well as these at Bolton Abbey station. They are planning to make a very limited OO Gauge model of this costing £199.95 so maybe a bit of an investment for the future....

The two handles you can see in the cab, one operates the electric brakes (which are also a first) the other is the speed - I've seen similar arrangements on old electric trams from a similar period which is what this was based on.

It cost over £1 million to restore plus a coach from the same period.

All taken with the Tokina 11-20mm f2.8 Wide Angle Lens.

Thanks Korky, I'm surprised that they aren't marketing this a bit more.

I've just realised the mono version is not a copy of the colour  version .....slightly different

Yes the mono version was taken 3 shots later as it was pulling out of Bolton Abbey Station.

I will agree with Korky that the colour version gives it an edge befitting the  colour scheme of the vehicle itself.

...And that Tokina is earning its keep :)

Thanks Denis.

Yes, it's been very useful for both landscapes and photographing trains where my usual 24-105mm lens would have not been able to get everything in.
