As a kid I hated these insects, mainly because my Grandad told me they would crawl into your ear and burrow into your brain.

We certainly don't see them as often as we used to, I can't recall seeing any recently, but back in the '70s they were very common.

Thanks James, I must admit in the 4 or 5 years I've macro photographing I've only spotted them twice. I did learn that they are mostly nocturnal which could explain it. My Grandad used to grow his own vegetables and as a kid in the 70's I would always find them in cauliflowers.

No, usually as I was bringing them in for my Grandma to wash before cutting up and cooking.
