Nothing wrong with diesel.
That's a good location - the trees make a pleasant background and the slight curve of the track gives a decent composition.

Thanks Gareth.

There's nothing wrong with diesel, I've photographed them many times on the ELR, except if you go there expecting a steam train.

It is a good spot for photographing the trains because you're slightly below the level of the track, you're very close and the curve in the track makes for a good composition.

Looks good in mono.

It certainly does look good with good strong blacks and full range of tones to the white light.

I'll see if I can work out where that was shot and try a steam engine here. I assume the picture was taken from a publicly accessible place. Beyond Bury and Ramsbottom Stations I have found it difficult to find good locations for reasonably close shots. But I was spoilt by having a lineside pass for the KWVR.

Yes, this was taken near Summerseat Station, if you park at the station , go under the railway bridge and turn left into Wood Road Lane, when you get to the bridge over the river on your left are some steep steps that take you to a crossing over the railway.

Another good spot is at Irwell Vale Station, there's also another good vantage point near Lumb Viaduct which is a short walk from the station. Townsend fold signal box is another popular spot just before Rawtenstall, you need to turn down Holme Lane to get to it. there's also a public footpath that goes through the K Steels works close to the signal box which takes you to another crossing which is good for watching the trains coming from Ramsbottom. In Rawtenstall, on New Hall Hey Rd, before you get to the crossing, on the right is a small lane/alley that leads to a gate where you can what the trains as they change ends and fill up at the water tower at the end of Rawtenstall Station platform.

Thanks for your info. I'll reacquaint myself with the ELR.

It's a pity camera club judges usually treat railway pictures with some disdain.
