I've seen people surprised when a G-C grebe manages a perch that isze.

It spent a long time trying and in the end swam out of sight still trying.

Even with a relatively small fish they will still take their time to make sure it is well and truly dead before swallowing it. I guess a spiny fish starting to wriggle in your throat is not a good idea!
