Morton Castle Dumfries and Galloway

We where lucky enough to get away for a week after Christmas and me and my daughter had been watching the weather to see if we would get a clear night to try this shot. Unfortunately and unlike me I was ill prepared and had no torch so we ended up stumbling around the castle and loch in the pitch black. And believe me when there is no moon it is very dark in this part of Scotland. I was so dark I could not see my camera bag on the floor when I'd put it down. As you can imagine this made for much hilarity as we stumbled around and tried to change lenses and settings in the dark. Hope you like the image!

ISO 2500, F4, and a 13 second exposure.

Ah... you went with high ISO rather than a really long exposure then.  The quality is pretty good for 2500 - I'm always reluctant to let my 60D go over 800.

To be honest Gareth we both took around seventy shots each of exactly the same view at every conceivable camera setting. I have to admit that this was partly due to the fact that trying to move anywhere else may have lead to us falling in the water it really was hilarious!  <sodemoji.1f601></sodemoji.1f601><sodemoji.1f601></sodemoji.1f601><sodemoji.1f601></sodemoji.1f601>

That’s an effective silhouette ScottT... (and it’s great that you have found your way on the site ... )

It looks that time of evening when the light disappears at a rate of knots doesn’t  it ...  and in the time it takes to take a lens cap off and set your exposure .... that perfect moment has often passed ... well it has in my experience... ?

Freezing cold, pitch black and stumbling around with your nineteen year old daughter next to a deep loch! What's not to like!
To be fair the spiced rum when we got back soon sorted the cold!
