So go on David, enlighten us all on how it was done, I've done exposures using film where I've shot the backgound first put then lens cap on and then had people move into frame - they always ended up being ghostly images though. I suspect this is some sort of photoshoppery using 3 or 4 layers...

Not all that clever really. Three shots using the tripod to keep the camera steady for all three. Camera on 10 sec self timer. Then Photoshop. Select image of me in picture two using lasso tool and insert it into the appropriate place on picture one. Then select image of me in picture three and insert it into picture one. Bob's your auntie! There is a slight imperfection as shown on the detail below but I doubt if anyone would see it. It's best to use a chaotic. irregular background like woodland to hide the joins.
