Yesterday I thought that I had completely blown a perfect casual portrait opportunity...these were shot inside a fairly dark cafe...I should have adjusted my camera settings to suit, but chatting to my subject was more interesting at the time.

The results were, to put it mildy...very noisy....I almost dumped them.

But I recalled the advise given by a pro wedding photographer.

Give noisy pics the mono treatment, then use software to use the noise for effect...here I converted using a KODAK 400 X film filter, then adjusted the tonal values...it worked.

I kow, I know, the plant is encroaching on my beautiful, chatty model....but accept it as just one f the trials of this kind of casual, ad-hoc shoot.

For me these are not up with your best FUJI.  I think the highlights are a little blown in the first image which detracts a little.  Number 2, she has a lovely face which I think would be improved with her really lively eyes shown in shot 1.

Your observationas and comments are just what I need Kev.....

My intention here wasn’t to show portraits at their best, but to point others towards being able to rescue an extremely noisy or underexposed shot m]by converting it into mono, then using software like ...Nik-Efex ....with a Film noise.

Here I used a  KODAK X 400 B/W film filter to make best use of its fear-turns, thereby rescuing a shot that was almost deleted.

I wanted to save that attractive face for my files.

She may return to the cafe when Im next there.
