Flying Ant Day

Whilst I've seen flying ants before, it was before I got my camera. I literally saw 100's this evening, to say they were tricky to photograph is an understatement. It wasn't that they were small, just very fast and erratic..

It always happens on one day doesn't it ....we had them  in our garage one year...which we can access from the house and when we opened the door, there were thousands of them.. just everywhere! The last thing on my mind was to go looking for my camera I must admit .

Well caught though Rye.

Cool Rye.

We had thousands in the house once on a door - had to call someone in to get rid. But they do make good subjects but are so fast on their feet. The ones I saw had already shed their wings.

The birds have a field day feeding on them ...they get high on the formic acid  they say ! Certain weather conditions  pre-empt the flight and a whole nest leaves on the same day ( not every nest on that one day but usually all within an area if the  weather is the same) Male and  female  fly on the Nuptual  flight  to breed with ants from another colony and the males I believe  die after that! The larger queen ants then go off to search for a new nesting place to start a new colony. She only ever flies that one time then spends the rest of her life making baby ants !  Amazing aren't they?
